WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT DOING BUSINESS IN OHIO?
We have found that lavender farming is a niche in the state of Ohio due to the fact that the climate is not very conducive to growing lavender. People typically associate lavender with France or the Western US. This has allowed us to generate a lot of interest for our farm and give people the opportunity to experience something that is not normally found in this area.
DESCRIPTION OF BUSINESS:
Sunshine Acres Lavender Farm is owned and managed by the Clarke family. Jeff and Jennifer Clarke moved to Morrow in 2014 in search of a more peaceful and simple environment to raise their family. They decided to research micro-crop options that would work on their secluded 7 acre property. In 2016, they planted 220 plants; and the Spring of 2017 brought the first beautiful harvest of lavender. The family has been enjoying sharing the lavender with the public at several u-pick events. A highlight for 2018 was their “VIP Sunset U-pick For-A-Cause” which included local champagne, a string quartet, and delicious lavender infused treats. The fundraiser benefitted CancerFree Kids. Their type of lavender is culinary grade and Jennifer has enjoyed sharing her cooking talents using their lavender. Lavender simple syrup, white chocolate lavender cookies, and whipped lavender honey butter have been crowd favorites.
Photographers have also discovered the farm to be an ideal location for year round rustic farm photography and seasonal lavender photos with their clients. With an increasing demand for fresh lavender, the Clarkes have increased their field to 800 plants and are hoping to continue adding even more plants in the future.
