Description of business:
Crayons to Classrooms is a nonprofit teacher resource center which is also known as a "free store for teachers” or a “store without a cash register.” Crayons to Classrooms helps under-funded teachers from low-income pre K-grade 12 schools in the Greater Dayton region obtain free school supplies for their economically disadvantaged students. Supplies are provided at no cost to schools and teachers. Statistics show that teachers can spend $500 to $1,000 per academic year of their own money to purchase school supplies for their students. Crayons to Classrooms stocks the "free store" by collecting donations of new, surplus, closeout, or other available school supplies. Basic school supplies are also purchased to stock the shelves of the “store” so that teachers who visit have a value-added experience. Teachers from eligible schools (70 percent or more of the students receive meals via the National School Lunch Program) are invited to visit and "shop" for essential supplies to share with their students twice during the school year – once each semester. During the 2015-2016 school year, teachers from 83 schools will visit Crayons to Classrooms. Since January 2009 through January 31, 2016, more than $9 million in merchandise has been distributed during 10,818 teacher shopping visits.
