The Spotted Cow Coffeehouse

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT DOING BUSINESS IN OHIO?

I feel Ohio’s mentality toward business is well aligned with my own business principles. Ohio has a sense of growth and opportunity, which can be found within Columbus and other growing areas. Ohio also has a sense of community, which is prevalent within the many towns throughout our beautiful state.

DESCRIPTION OF BUSINESS:

At age 23, Bobbi Custer was inspired to open The Spotted Cow Coffeehouse by her brothers, Eric and Levi, who both have Down’s syndrome. Custer’s vision was to give her younger brothers the ability to grow ambition with age, as she did. Bobbi notes in a letter to Eric and Levi, “...it is my eternal dream to create and fulfill the dreams that you have.” In 2014, Custer put full effort toward her vision: a workplace opportunity for her brothers and those in similar circumstances to thrive with the motivation that their dreams are of genuine worth too. The Spotted Cow has since gained awards from Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (Creating Opportunity, 2015) and Better Business Bureau (Spark Award, 2017).

As a business owner, her vision is to show that adults with disabilities are contributors rather than consumers, and the coffee industry is only one pathway within that vision. She has learned to always put a large sense of pride toward internal forces, associates. They are often more of the face of the business than she is. She strives to help associates of The Spotted Cow Coffeehouse build a sense of pride for the business creation, so their self-esteem and overall quality of life shines outwardly.
