There is a growing recognition throughout the state that there are homeless youth and young adults living invisibly in every Ohio community and there is a new willingness among state agencies to work together in order to meet the housing and support needs of this most vulnerable population.

Daybreak changes lives and creates new futures for homeless, at-risk, and troubled youth in the Dayton region. Daybreak serves youth and young adults in crisis through five core programs: 1) The 16-bed emergency shelter, open 24/7, provides safety, shelter, food, clothing, counseling, and stability to 10- to 18-year-olds every year; 2) The region’s only housing program designed to move homeless youth ages 18 to 21 out of homelessness, poverty, under-education, and crisis and into housing, financial independence, educational achievement, and self-sufficiency. 3) Street outreach provides youth who are couch-hopping or living on the streets with food, necessities, and advice while helping them find a safe place to live. 4) Alma’s Place is our 10-bedroom housing program for young adults ages 18-24, with mental health challenges but who have potential to live independently if provided with support and an opportunity to mature. 5) Daybreak’s employment program helps Daybreak youth develop the skills necessary to get and keep jobs.

Lindy & Company, Daybreak’s pet treat bakery, is the agency’s in-house job training program. In addition, youth receive job assessment and job placement services. Daybreak serves close to 2,000 youth each year from Montgomery, Greene, Miami, Butler, Preble and other surrounding counties.
