Secretary Husted Sets Special Election Schedule

SECRETARY HUSTED SETS SPECIAL ELECTION SCHEDULE

COLUMBUS – Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted today directed county boards of elections within the 8th Congressional District of Ohio to begin preparing for the Special Congressional Primary and General Elections. The Secretary also issued the election calendar for the Special Primary Election, to be held in conjunction with the 2016 Presidential Primary Election on March 15, 2016, and the Special General Election, to be held on June 7, 2016. The Southwest Ohio seat was vacated by United States House Speaker, Representative John Boehner (R–Ohio).

Among other important deadlines, the calendar includes the following:

December 16, 2015 Declaration of Candidacy for partisan candidates must be filed with the Butler County Board of Elections by 4:00 pm
(90 days before the election)
January 30, 2016 UOCAVA absentee ballots for the March 15, 2016 Presidential Primary and Special Congressional Primary Elections must be available.
February 16, 2016 Deadline to register to vote in the March 15, 2016 Presidential Primary and Special Congressional Primary Elections
(30 days before the election)
February 17, 2016 All absentee voting begins for the March 15, 2016 Presidential Primary and Special Congressional Primary Elections
March 14, 2016 Nominating petitions for independent candidates must be filed with the Butler County Board of Elections by 4:00pm
(one day before special primary)
March 15, 2016 2016 Presidential Primary Election and Special Primary Election for the 8th Congressional District
April 23, 2016 UOCAVA absentee ballots for the June 7, 2016 Special General Election for the 8th Congressional District must be available
May 9, 2016 Deadline for voter registration for the June 7, 2016 Special General Election for the 8th Congressional District
May 10, 2016 All absentee voting begins for the for the June 7, 2016 Special General Election for the 8th Congressional District
June 7, 2016 Special General Election for the 8th Congressional District

The United States Constitution, as well as Section 3521.03 of the Ohio Revised Code, require a special election be held to fill a vacancy in the U.S. Congress. The Governor of the state where the vacancy occurred is empowered to set the dates of the special primary and general elections. Secretary Husted, in his official capacity as the state’s chief elections officer, sets the calendar and deadlines within those elections.
