Secretary of State Husted Awards More Than $14,700 to County Boards of Elections for Permanent Polling Place Improvements

COLUMBUS – As part of an ongoing effort to improve accessibility at polling locations across Ohio, Secretary of State Jon Husted today announced that more than $14,700 was awarded to the Brown and Logan County Boards of Elections for improvements to community facilities that are used as polling locations on Election Day.

“Improving access at polling locations not only makes them more accessible on Election Day, but also improves the location for the community year round,” Secretary Husted said. “No matter a person’s physical limitations, every voter should be able to easily cast a ballot.”

The improvements were made at the following locations:

Brown County – Perry Township Building - $2,000
A 26 foot by 20 foot asphalt parking lot was laid to provide two accessible parking spaces with appropriate striping. The project also fixed a small area of a concrete sidewalk.

Logan County – Zanesfield Fire House - $1,512
For installation of a 28 foot by 20 foot asphalt pad that provides two accessible parking spaces with appropriate striping.

Logan County – Monroe Township Building - $7,615
A new ramp and a concrete accessible parking area were installed. In addition, proper striping and vertical signage was put up.

Logan County – Lakeview Village Building - $3,600
A curb cut ramp was put in place with improvements on the sidewalks. The project also included an accessible parking space with striping and vertical signage.

Counties and communities across the state have the opportunity to apply for permanent improvement grants throughout the year for polling place enhancements. Since Secretary Husted has taken office he has awarded more than $218,500 for 75 permanent improvements statewide. Funding for these grants is authorized by the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) and is administered through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
