Statement by Secretary of State Husted Regarding Today's Ohio Supreme Court Rulings

COLUMBUS – The following may be attributed in whole, or in part, to Secretary of State Jon Husted regarding today’s rulings by the Ohio Supreme Court in Coble v. Lucas County Board of Elections and Mahoney v. Lucas County Board of Elections.

“Earlier this year, I issued a directive stating that a person who withdraws his or her candidacy cannot re-file for the same office in the same election.

“In issuing this directive, I relied upon the 2005 Supreme Court decision in Canales-Flores v. Lucas County Board of Election.

“Today, the Supreme Court reversed course and held that a person who withdraws his or her candidacy can re-file for the same office in the same election.

“Given today’s ruling by the Supreme Court, I intend to issue a new directive that is consistent with the Supreme Court’s latest decision.”
