SECRETARY OF STATE HUSTED APPOINTS FORMER STATE REPRESENTATIVE SANDRA STABILE HARWOOD
TO THE TRUMBULL COUNTY BOARD OF ELECTIONS

COLUMBUS – Secretary of State Jon Husted today appointed former State Representative Sandra Stabile Harwood to a vacant seat on the Trumbull County Board of Elections.

“Sandra Stabile Harwood is an outstanding public servant and will serve the people of Trumbull County well as a member of the Board of Elections,” Husted said.

Ms. Harwood will complete the unexpired term of Ralph Infante, who resigned from the Board in January due to the fact that he will be a candidate on this year’s General Election ballot.

An attorney in private practice, Sandra Stabile Harwood served four terms in the Ohio House of Representatives (2003-2010), representing Ohio’s 65th District, which encompasses the southern portion of Trumbull County. She also previously worked as the in-house counsel and chief administrative hearing officer for the Trumbull County Child Support Enforcement Agency. She serves as the state and regional director of the National Foundation for Women Legislators and is member of the Trumbull County Bar Association. Harwood has also been a member of the League of Women Voters and a past-president of the Ohio Family Support Association, among many other affiliations. Harwood is a graduate of Kent State University and earned her Juris Doctorate from the University of Akron School of Law. In 2004, she was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court. She is a life-long resident of Trumbull County and active in the Democratic Party.

Ohio Revised Code 3501.07 provides that the executive committee of local political parties make recommendations to the Secretary of State for appointment to county boards of elections. In this case, the Trumbull County Democratic Party recommended Daniel Polivka to fill the vacancy on the Trumbull County Board of Elections. Due to the incompatibility of the positions of board of elections member and county commissioner, which has budgetary authority over the board, the Secretary rejected that recommendation on March 9, 2011, and noted that the party could make a second recommendation. The Secretary has not received a second recommendation, but is required by law to make an appointment.
