First meeting of Transparency Committee set for Wednesday, April 9, 2014

COLUMBUS – In an effort to address ongoing problems at the Lucas County Board of Elections, Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted today issued Directive 2014-11 to create a Transparency Committee for Lucas County to shed light on board operations and ensure an open and effective elections process. The committee will meet on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Lucas County Board of Elections.

“Despite the guidance and support elections officials in Lucas County have received from my office in recent years, it has become apparent that there is a severe lack of communication among board members and between the board and its staff,” Secretary Husted said. “Steps must now be taken to force public accountability and open dialogue to focus on finding local solutions to local problems.”

Secretary Husted announced the committee will be comprised of four individuals, two Republicans and two Democrats, who each have experience with elections and government operations in Ohio. Committee members include:

  • Scott Borgemenke, Chair (former Assistant Secretary of State);
  • Jennifer Brunner (former Secretary of State);
  • James Ruvolo (Ruvolo & Associates); and,
  • Jonathan Allison (Carpenter Lipps & Leland).

Secretary Husted noted the necessity for creating of the Transparency Committee in the directive to the Lucas Board of Elections.

“The voters of Lucas County deserve first-class elections, and I will take whatever action I deem necessary to make sure that becomes a reality,” Secretary Husted wrote. “It is my expectation that the board will fully cooperate with the Transparency Committee, as they will help the board do what they seemingly cannot: govern themselves, set aside partisan and personal bickering, and cooperate in the interest of elections administration.”

All board members are expected to attend the initial meeting and any subsequent hearings. The committee will address issues surrounding board operations and elections preparedness.
