Secretary Husted Expands Online Business Filings
Addition of new services will further improve access and convenience for users.
COLUMBUS – As part of a continuing effort to make it easier to do business in Ohio, Secretary of State Jon Husted today announced that his office has expanded the services available at Ohio Business Central, the office’s online business filing system. Businesses can now create a limited partnership and file for reinstatement – steps that previously had to be done with paper forms and through the mail. These enhancements are designed to roll out the red carpet to business and job creation by cutting red tape.
“If Ohio wants to attract new companies, we have to continue to improve and modernize the way business is done,” Secretary Husted said. “By focusing on what our customers need we are enabling them to focus on growing their company, which means new job opportunities and a better quality of life for many Ohioans.”
Secretary Husted launched Ohio Business Central in October of 2013 to simplify the business filing process, benefitting both customers and taxpayers. Online filing reduces processing times for customers and streamlines administrative operations – making government more efficient.
The new filing services build upon Ohio Business Central’s existing offerings, including forming a limited liability company in Ohio, renewing a trade or fictitious names and filing biennial reports for professional associations or limited liability partnerships, as well as statements of continued existence for nonprofit corporations. By adding to the list of the most frequently-used forms available online, approximately half of all filings received by the Secretary of State’s office in 2012 can now be done conveniently at Ohio Business Central. Since the office launched online filing in October of 2013, more than 8,700 filings have been submitted through the online system.
Prior to being able to file online, customers were required to complete a paper form, attach a check to pay for the filing fee and then return the completed form by mail. The Secretary of State’s business services division would then review the filing, process the payment and send a notice via mail that the paperwork and payment had been approved. If there were any issues with the filing, the customer would be notified, their payment refunded and they could be required to start the process over. This procedure could often take several days to complete.
Businesses can file electronically via the Secretary of State’s Ohio Business Central online, at www.OhioSecretaryofState.gov, after creating a profile to access the secure site. Once logged in, users can select from the available options, provide payment for filing fees and manage their account. The online system allows businesses to complete the submission process, from start to finish, in less than one day in some cases.
The Secretary of State’s office will continue to make paper forms available for those who prefer to file business forms using the traditional method.
