Secretary of State Husted Awards More Than $18,650 to County Boards of Elections for Permanent Polling Place Improvements
Enhancements ensure polling locations comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act.

COLUMBUS – As part of an ongoing effort to improve accessibility at polling locations across Ohio, Secretary of State Jon Husted today announced that more than $18,650 was awarded to the Belmont, Ross, Greene, Logan, Carroll, Muskingum, and Hardin County Boards of Elections for improvements to community facilities that are used as polling locations on Election Day.

“The funds awarded will help to ensure more polling places are accessible on Election Day for all voters, no matter their physical limitations," Secretary Husted said. “These projects also have the added benefit of improving the facilities for year round use for the communities they serve.”

The improvements were made at the following locations:

Belmont County – Valley Inn - $1,810
Addition of a 20 foot by 20 foot concrete van-accessible parking space, complete with appropriate striping and an accessible parking sign.

Ross County – Ohio University Chillicothe - Shoemaker Center - $286
Addition of accessible parking signs.

Greene County – Spring Valley United Methodist Church - $2,650
Construction of a five foot by six foot concrete area, entrance door made level, and an addition of a sidewalk that leads to an accessible parking area that was already in place.

Logan County – Bokescreek Township Building - $1,269
Construction on existing ramp and sidewalk and addition of accessible parking signs.

Carroll County – New Harrisburg Presbyterian Church - $3,695
Addition of a 18 foot by 20 foot concrete pad large enough for one van-accessible parking space, complete with appropriate striping and an accessible parking sign, as well as an additional 36 inch wide sidewalk from the parking pad to the door.

Muskingum County – Meigs Community Building - $4,280
Addition of a 20 foot by 20 foot concrete van-accessible parking space with a four foot by 36 foot sidewalk area leading to an existing ramp, complete with a new 42 inch wide entrance door.

Hardin County – Cessna Township Hall - $4,666
Construction of a new 15 foot concrete ramp complete with handrails.

Counties and communities across the state have the opportunity to apply for permanent improvement grants throughout the year for polling place enhancements. Since Secretary Husted has taken office he has awarded more than $237,150 for 82 permanent improvements statewide. Funding for these grants is authorized by the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) and is administered through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
