Secretary of State Jon Husted Marks Major Achievement in Ongoing Effort to Maintain Ohio’s Voter Rolls
Statewide Voter Registration Database effectively clear of duplicate registrations ahead of next Tuesday’s General Election.

Columbus – Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted today announced a significant milestone regarding voter list maintenance. Working with county boards of elections officials, nearly all duplicate registrations have been cleared from the Statewide Voter Registration Database. As it stands heading into the 2013 General Election, out of more than 7.7 million voters statewide, there are currently just four duplicate registrations, a dramatic drop from the more than 340,000 duplicate records that existed in January 2011, when Secretary Husted took office.

“Maintaining accurate and up-to-date voter rolls is an ongoing process that is important in helping to ensure greater security and more efficiency in the administration of elections in Ohio,” Secretary Husted said. “The success our state has had in cleaning up the voter rolls is one example of how we are making it easier to vote and harder cheat.”

Ohio’s Progress Maintaining Ohio’s Voter Rolls

  • Voter records with complete info up from 20 percent in January 2011, to now 86 percent.
  • More than 129,500 voters have updated their address using Online Change of Address system.
  • Since January 2011, nearly 245,000 deceased Ohioans verified and removed from voter rolls.
  • More than 300,000 mailings have gone out as part of 2013 National Change of Address Mailing allowing voters to update their information and confirm their registrations to stay on the rolls.
  • Contacted 370,000 voters who either moved out of state (70,000) or within Ohio (300,000) to update their voting information or cancel registration in 2012 ahead of presidential election.

“Working with the 88 county boards of elections, we have done more in the last two and a half years to improve and maintain the Ohio’s voter rolls than has been done since the Statewide Voter Registration Database was established in 2004 – ensuring the system’s integrity and instilling confidence into Ohio voters.”
