Secretary Husted Announces August Ohio Business Profiles
Great Ohio-based nonprofits show “Ohio Gives Back”

COLUMBUS – Looking to showcase the generosity of Ohioans, Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted today announced that August’s Ohio Business Profile features seven non-profit organizations in the business of helping their communities and fellow Ohioans.

“These organizations are committed to creating opportunities for both those they serve and those they employ,” Secretary Husted said. “Ohio has an abundance of organizations and dedicated people who are working to make our communities stronger.”

According to a recent report from the National Center for Charitable Statistics with the Urban Institute, there are more than 60,000 nonprofits operating in Ohio, raising billions of dollars for assistance and research each year and employing nearly 500,000 paid workers.

Companies profiled this month include:

  • DaybreakDayton, Ohio – Provides homeless, at-risk and troubled youth with support and opportunities to mature, serving nearly 2,000 youth each year in western Ohio.
  • Artworks – Cincinnati, Ohio – An award-winning organization that employs and trains local youth to create art with a community impact, employing more than 2,500 youth apprentices and 650 professional artists to create dozens of murals in the Greater Cincinnati area.
  • Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption – Columbus, Ohio – Started by the founder of Wendy’s in 1992, it is the only national nonprofit public charity dedicated solely to foster care adoptions, with nearly 200 recruiters throughout the U.S. and Canada.
  • Boneyfiddle Arts Center, Inc. – Portsmouth, Ohio – Believes community art centers are vital parts of a healthy and desirable community and for the past three years have brought together people from diverse backgrounds who share a passion for artistic expression.
  • New Heights Educational Group, Inc. Defiance, Ohio – Established in 2006 with the goal to promote literacy to children and adults, they were recently awarded Nonprofit of the Year by the American Business Awards.
  • Family Connections of Northeast Ohio – Shaker Heights and Cleveland Heights, Ohio – Founded by women seeking a place to increase children’s socialization skills, they serve families from 19 communities in northeast Ohio.
  • Mothers Helping Mothers, Inc. – Columbus, Ohio Started in 2009 to help equip young mothers with the tools necessary to succeed, they helped more than 100 mothers last year and they plan to double that number in 2013.

Launched in June 2011, Ohio Business Profile has helped raise awareness about companies registered and doing business in Ohio that are creating interesting products, offering outstanding service, contributing to their local communities and employing Ohioans in the process. Each month, a handful of diverse businesses linked together by a common theme are featured on the Secretary of State’s website at OhioBusinessProfile.com, where Ohioans are encouraged to go to submit companies they feel are deserving of recognition in future months.

Secretary Husted’s office also releases a monthly report of new business filings in Ohio. Recent data has shown that the number of newly-registered businesses in Ohio is up for the year as compared to the same timeframe last year.
