Secretary of State Husted Refers Potential Voter Fraud Case in Fulton County for Further Investigation

COLUMBUS – Secretary of State Jon Husted today referred a case involving potential voter fraud in Fulton County to the Ohio Attorney General for further review and possible prosecution. An initial review by the Fulton County Board of Elections revealed that an individual, who appears to be a registered voter in both Ohio and South Carolina, may have voted in both states in multiple elections.

“We take any hint of voter fraud very seriously,” Secretary Husted said. “It is critical to the integrity of our voting system that legitimate voters’ ballots are not being diluted by those seeking to game the system.”

The Fulton County Board of Elections notified the Secretary of State’s office after discovering that an individual, who has been registered to vote in Ohio since 2006, has the same name and personal information as a voter who has been a registered and active voter in South Carolina since 2002. This individual may have cast ballots in the 2008 and 2010 general elections in both states. The board has been working with South Carolina elections officials to get more information about this individual’s voting history.

Participating in the same election in two different states would be a violation of Ohio elections law, constituting a fourth degree felony.

The referral letter is available here.
