SECRETARY OF STATE HUSTED WELCOMES STUDENT-ELECTED SECRETARIES OF STATE FROM BUCKEYE BOYS AND GIRLS STATE
COLUMBUS –Secretary of State Jon Husted welcomed Octavious Singleton of Streetsboro, Ohio and Wei Sun of Mason, Ohio to his office today. They were both elected Secretary of State at Buckeye Boys and Girls State held earlier this summer.
“Both of these programs give young people practical experiences that will stick with them as they become active participants in our democracy,” said Secretary Husted. “The lessons they learn at Buckeye Boys and Girls State set them up for success as Ohio’s future leaders.”
The American Legion’s Buckeye Boys State was held the week of June 11th at Bowling Green State University. Nearly 1350 young men participated in the nine-day hands-on experience in the operation of the democratic form of government, the organization of political parties, and the relationship of one to the other in shaping Ohio government.
Buckeye Girls State was held June 12th – 18th at the University of Mount Union. It was a week-long program designed to educate Ohio's young women in the duties, privileges, rights, and responsibilities of good citizenship.
Representatives from the Secretary of State’s office attended both Buckeye Boys and Girls State this summer to consult with the “newly-elected” Secretaries of State and offer their perspective on the responsibilities of the office.
