Ohioans in the U.S. Military

For more than 200 years, Ohioans have played an important role in the U.S. Military, serving proudly at all levels in the armed forces.

Congressional Medal of HonorOhioans featured prominently on both sides in the American Civil War, with some conflict even occurring within the state's borders and a Lake Erie island housing a prisoner-of-war camp for Southern officers. President Abraham Lincoln signed a law establishing the Medal of Honor in 1862. The medal was to be awarded "to such noncommissioned officers and privates as shall most distinguish themselves by their gallantry in action, and other soldierlike qualities, during the present insurrection." Congress made the Medal of Honor a permanent decoration a year later.

In the years since, nearly 3,500 Americans have received the medal, which is the nation's highest military honor. Of those, a total of 330 are from Ohio. Ohio's 330 medal of honor recipients hail from 72 of the Buckeye State's 88 counties. Click here for a complete list of all Ohioans who have received the Medal of Honor.

In 1992, the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame was established to honor the state's veterans and their contributions to their communities following their service. For more information on the Ohio Veteran's Hall of Fame, including a complete list of inductees, click here.

The Ohio Secretary of State's Office has a way you can celebrate a veteran in your life. Vote in Honor of a Veteran recognizes the service of our brave veterans by allowing Ohioans to dedicate their votes to a special veteran on Election Day. Participants can share a tribute and photos of their honored veteran on the Secretary of State's website and receive a pin to wear on Election Day.
