What do you like about doing business in Ohio? Despite the stereotype that the Midwest tends to be behind in trends, I find that people in Ohio and especially the Cincinnati region to be very progressive. Ohioans are primarily here because they want to be here which makes them more involved in the state of the community which they live. I think this is part of the reason why Ohio is a leader in the country and Cincinnati is a leader in the state in LEED certified buildings. The citizens and leaders of Ohio understand the investment that they are making in our built environment and ultimately our economic and environmental viability.
Description of business: Greener Stock is a one-of-a-kind Resource and Design Center in Cincinnati specializing in natural, non-toxic, and eco-friendly building products for the home and business including wall finishes, flooring, countertops, and water/energy efficiency.
We strive to find products that meet the following green building strategies:
-Regional sourcing and manufacturing
-Third Party Certifications for environmental and social concerns
-Proven Market Performance and Longevity
-Maximum Recycled Content
-Proven to have contributed to LEED points
-The Manufacturer's Environmental Commitment
We selected to occupy an existing building in a dense, urban neighborhood and that was near our home. The building required only minor updating. The materials that were removed were salvaged, if possible, for reuse in the store or donated to Cincinnati's Habitat for Humanity Restore. Recycled denim insulation was added to the ceiling to increase energy efficiency. The walls, ceiling, and concrete floor were painted and sealed with the non-toxic paint products. Our sales counter showcases recycled paper counters and reclaimed sugarcane paneling. Lights are all high-efficiency. Finally, our store fixtures and displays are mostly salvaged and repurposed items. All of these strategies, while environmentally friendly, were also economical.
We recycle our office waste and promote community recycling efforts through our ongoing electronics collection and recycling program in conjunction with Players for the Planet.
In addition to product sales, we provide workshops and seminars for the public to build awareness about the benefits of green building.
