What do you like about doing business in Ohio? With the growing demand for seafood and a limited supply from wild catch, there is an increasing need to produce healthy fish, using sustainable methods. Residents of the Midwest seek locally grown beef, chicken, fruits and vegetables. It’s time to add seafood to that list! With unused farm buildings and underutilized water resources, Ohio is just the place to fill this need!
Description of business: Ripple Rock Fish Farms, LLC began in 2011 with two 55 gallon drums filled with about 12 goldfish, housed in our garage! We set out to see if we could grow fish and gain an understanding of a simple, indoor recirculating aquaculture system.
It worked! In fact, we finally gave the goldfish away so that we could turn our attention toward a 3,000 gallon system, built in our existing barn, growing 2,500 lbs. of tilapia.
As we continue to grow, we have now built a new building, with the goal of producing 50,000 lbs. of tilapia a year!! In addition, we have embarked on a research project with the USDA, investigating new technology to help other small farms enter the aquaculture market.
Known by some as St. Peter’s fish, tilapia is one of the most popular seafood items in the country because of its mild taste and easy recipes.
